A double-sided brain injury occurs when a force to the head causes damage on both sides of the brain. This often happens through a mechanism called contra-coup motion, where the brain strikes the opposite side of the skull after an initial impact. For example, if a person is hit on one side of the head, the brain can move and hit the opposite side, leading to injuries on both sides of the brain.
